It’s ok to ask the question about elder abuse

A new campaign has been launched to raise awareness of the issue of elder abuse.

The new campaign is based on the concept, “It’s ok to ask the question,” recognising that it is not always easy to determine if a situation is an instance of elder abuse and encouraging contact with the Tasmanian Elder Abuse Helpline for advice, information and referrals. The ads will feature on television, radio, in print and across a number of digital platforms.

Elder abuse can be a complex issue and unfortunately often happens in the home.

The forms of abuse can be overt, or can be perpetuated unknowingly.

The campaign is a call to action to our community, recognising that elder abuse is everybody’s business, and whilst we don’t always need to have the answers about elder abuse, we can seek information and advice if we are worried about someone who may be being abused, if we feel we may be being abused, or even if we are worried that our own actions may be causing harm to an older person.

It’s ok to have concerns. It’s ok to want to help. It’s ok to ask for advice.  It’s ok to ask the question.

Anyone who wants to know more, seek advice or thinks they, or someone else are experiencing elder abuse, can call the Tasmanian Elder Abuse Helpline on 1800 441 169.

The campaign is a key action of the elder abuse prevention strategy Respect and Protect Older Tasmanians – Tasmania’s Elder Abuse Prevention Strategy 2019 – 2022.
