Sustainable Timber Tasmania, Non-Executive Director

Sustainable Timber Tasmania (STT) is looking for three Non‑Executive Directors to join its Board.

Applications close Thursday 6 February 2026.

Directors will support STT through a significant strategic transition. The Board is responsible for long‑term strategic direction, robust governance, oversight of commercial performance, environmental stewardship, policy engagement, and strengthening public and stakeholder confidence in Tasmania’s renewable timber sector.

The successful applicants will bring expertise in one or more of the following areas:

  • Forestry Operations: Operational forestry, supply chain management, and sector transformation.
  • Financial Acumen: Commerciality, financial oversight, and strategic investment capability.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Experience working with government, industry and community, including understanding of GBE and government processes.
  • Risk & Compliance: Governance, strategy, safety and regulatory compliance.
  • Digital Transformation: Vision for digital innovation and technology adoption in the forestry sector.

Biosecurity Advisory Committee

The Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania (NRE Tas) is calling for Expressions of Interest to fill upcoming one Chairperson and five member vacancies on the Biosecurity Advisory Committee, as follows:

The Biosecurity Advisory Committee (BAC) was established under Section 267 of the Biosecurity Act 2019. The Biosecurity Advisory Committee provides advice to the Minister for Primary Industries and Water and Secretary on any matter relating to biosecurity.

Essential requirements for the Chairperson include:

  • Proven experience in leadership roles, preferrable within a board or committee setting.
  • Proven experience in strategic planning, policy development and stakeholder engagement in complex, multi-sectoral environments.
  • Strong facilitation and consensus-building skills, with the ability to lead diverse groups toward strategic outcomes.
  • High-level communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to represent the Committee publicly and liaise effectively with government, industry, and community stakeholders.
  • Analytical and decision-making skills, with the ability to interpret complex information and provide clear, evidence-based advice.
  • Commitment to the principles of biosecurity and the protection of Tasmania’s agricultural, environmental, and tourism assets.

Essential requirements for the members include:

  • Demonstrated expertise in one or more of the following areas:
    • Animal-based agricultural industries
    • Plant-based agricultural industries
    • Public administration
    • Science, industry and community liaison and education
    • Tourism industries
  • High level strategic policy and advisory experience
  • Ability to read and interpret information
  • Ability to engage in evidence-based discussions
  • Genuine interest in biosecurity

Animal Ethics Committee

The Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania (NRE Tas) is seeking to appoint two members to its Animal Ethics Committee (AEC).

Applications have been extended until Sunday, 15 February 2026.

The AEC ensures that all animal care and use activities comply with the Australian code for the care and use of animals for scientific purposes and the Tasmanian Animal Welfare Act 1993. Its responsibilities include reviewing and approving projects, monitoring animal care and housing, addressing non‑compliance and adverse events, and providing advice and reports to the institution.

Successful applicants will bring:

  • Ability to acquire knowledge of the Australian Code for the Care & Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes and its practical application.
  • Commitment to the ethical principles underpinning the humane care and use of animals in research.
  • Able to make decisions solely on ethical and community considerations, rather than scientific or organisational benefit.
  • Sound computer literacy skills, including the ability to read, interpret and comment on meeting materials using an online platform.
  • Willingness and ability to abide by policies and procedures in place or introduced by the Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania.
  • Willingness and ability to dedicate the necessary time and effort to fulfill the responsibilities of a Category D member.

Poppy Advisory and Control Board

The Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania (NRE Tas) is seeking expressions of interest to fill an upcoming Chairperson vacancy on the Poppy Advisory and Control Board.

Applications close Sunday, 15 February 2026.

The purpose of the Poppy Advisory and Control Board is to oversee security matters for Tasmanian poppy crops, determine production estimates and ensure compliance, process applications for licences to grow poppies, advise on matters relating to the alkaloid poppy industry, collect and collate statistical information and reports, and liaise with the Australian Government to fulfil Australia’s obligations under international drug conventions.

Essential requirements for this role include:

  • Qualifications, experience or skills relevant to the poppy growing industry or the poppy processing industry.
  • Not currently engaged in the poppy growing or poppy processing industry.
  • Highly developed communication and liaison skills

Inland Fisheries Advisory Council

The Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania (NRE Tas) is seeking expressions of interest to fill an upcoming one member vacancy on the Inland Fisheries Advisory Council.

Applications close Sunday, 1 March 2026.

The Inland Fisheries Advisory Council primary role is to advise the Minister on inland fisheries issues, provide a forum for consultation, promote understanding and acceptance of the functions of the Director of Inland Fisheries, encourage community support for fisheries management activities and review management plans for inland fisheries.

Essential requirements for this role include:

  • Ability to collaborate and communicate with a wide range of stakeholders, including government agencies, local communities, recreational and commercial fishing representatives, and conservation groups.
  • Ability to provide advice to help inform strategic planning and long-term vision setting.
  • General understanding of corporate governance principles.
