The role of the Tasmanian Women’s Council is to:

  • advise the Tasmanian Government on issues of importance to women
  • contribute to the development of strategies that address inequality
  • increase the participation of women in all aspects of society.

About the Tasmanian Women's Council

Members of the Tasmanian Women's Council (TWC) are appointed to champion the rights and interests of women in Government decision-making.

Key undertakings for the Council include:

  • advising on the implementation of Equal means Equal: Tasmanian Women’s Strategy 2022-27; and
  • building employment pathways for women in areas of economic importance to Tasmania, and in sectors where women are under-represented.

Membership

The Council aims to represent the social, economic, demographic and regional diversity of Tasmanian women through its membership and networks.

Members are appointed as individuals, based on their specific skills, experience and knowledge. not as representatives of groups or organisations.

Being a member of the Council is a voluntary role. Members are appointed for a two-year term and may be reappointed for a further two-year term.

Members have the demonstrated capacity to make worthwhile contributions in relation to:

  • the participation of groups of women in Tasmania who have particular needs. For example, Aboriginal women; women of culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds; women with a disability; women from regional communities; young women; or women from the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or intersex (LGBTIQ+) community; and
  • an issue of relevance to women in Tasmania such as leadership, literacy, homelessness, employment, health, education, childcare, family violence, consumer affairs, justice, welfare, environment and others.
